# What is Thymer

Thymer is a new take on notes, tasks, planning, and organizing information. For work or personal projects. This page shows what's different.

## A new kind of editor

Built from the ground up, the editor combines the power of outliners with WYSIWYG flexibility and the speed of plain text.

- Designed for long-form documents, structured thinking, and task management. Fast whether you're brainstorming, journaling, building a knowledge base, or planning projects.
- Edit like plain text. Add rich content. Collapse or zoom into sections. Mention dates and people, reference other pages, track tasks and progress.
- IDE-level power, but for writing and planning: split views, command palettes, keyboard shortcuts for everything, queries, and more.
- Serious tools, with a bit of fun.

[Writing and formatting](../writing/writing-and-formatting.md) shows what the editor can do.

## Offline-first speed, encryption, real-time multiplayer, and web access

No trade-off between privacy and convenience. Thymer combines the speed and privacy of offline apps with real-time collaboration and access from anywhere, including the web, using end-to-end encrypted background sync when you're online.

- Workspace data is downloaded to your device, so interactions are instant.
- Fully functional offline. Feels just like a local editor.
- Seamless background sync when online.
- Work solo or with your team. Control access with admin permissions.
- End-to-end encryption means no one else, not even us, can read your data.
- Your data is yours. [Eject](https://thymer.com/ejectable) at any time: export all of it, or keep a live copy as Markdown files. A self-hosted server is coming soon.

See [Offline and sync](../apps-and-settings/offline-and-sync.md), [Encryption and recovery keys](../your-data/encryption-and-recovery-keys.md) and [Export and backups](../your-data/export-and-backups.md).

## A flexible way to organize any information

Everyone works differently. Thymer is *hackable* to fit your workflow. Organize anything in work or life into clean, structured databases called *collections*. Project boards, artwork tables, wiki lists: whether it's visual or data-heavy, just add properties to shape and structure your notes.

- View your data in multiple ways, like a kanban board, a spreadsheet-style table or a visual gallery.
- Add properties to define, structure and filter your data.
- Power user? Customize and automate with JavaScript [plugins](../plugins.md).
- Complete out of the box. Simple by default. Extend when you need more.

See [Setting up a collection](../collections/setting-up-a-collection.md).

## Try it in your workspace

A new account's first workspace starts with this page in an **Examples** collection, together with a [Getting Started](getting-started.md) checklist. Change them, add to them, or delete them when you're done.
