# Pages

> Shortcuts are written for the Mac. On Windows and Linux, use Ctrl where it says Cmd, unless the text names another key.

You can create pages for anything you need to keep track of. A meeting note, a project outline, recipe, knowledge base article, trip report, contact, or just a random note or idea.

Every page lives in a collection, a folder and a database in one. The collection decides which properties the page has and in which views it shows up. A plain notes collection is fine for most pages; see [Setting up a collection](../collections/setting-up-a-collection.md) for when you want more.

*A page: headings, text, tasks and links, with the sidebar beside it.*

## Create a page

Press Ctrl+N (macOS) or Alt+N (Windows/Linux). The new page goes to the workspace's default collection; admins choose which one that is with **Set Default Collection**. To create a page in a particular collection, click the **+** next to it in the sidebar.

You can also press Cmd+K and type the title of the new page. When no page has that title yet, the list offers to create it, in the default collection or in another one.

While you write, type `@` and part of a title to link to an existing page. Type the title of a page that doesn't exist yet, and the same menu creates it: pick a collection under **Create "…" in**, and the new page is made and linked in one step.

Text you already wrote can become a page too. Select it and type `@`: the menu offers to create a page with the selected text as its title, in a collection or as a sub-page of the current page, and the text turns into the link to it.

## Title, icon and banner

Pick **Set Title & Icon** from the page menu to rename a page or give it an icon. A page without an icon of its own shows the icon of its collection, unless that is the folder icon. **Change Banner...** adds a picture across the top, a cover image. Collections can have icons and banners too. Use icons consistently, for example one for projects and another for processes, so people recognize a kind of page at once.

## Sub-pages

A page can sit under another page, the nested pages of other tools. Choose **Create sub-page** on the parent, or set the page's **Sub-page of** property. Use it for a handbook with chapters, or a project with its own notes. A sub-page is an ordinary page: it has the same properties as the rest of its collection and can be linked from anywhere.

## Move a page

**Move...** in the page menu moves it to another collection. Links keep working, because they point to the page itself, wherever it is. If the new collection lacks some of the page's properties, their values stay on the page as carried-over properties, so nothing is lost. Right-click one for **Add to collection** or **Clear carried-over value**; see [Files and frontmatter](../markdown-mirror/files-and-frontmatter.md#frontmatter).

## Trash

**Move to Trash** removes a page from all views. Open **Trash** to bring it back with **Restore from Trash**. See [Version history and Trash](../your-data/version-history-and-trash.md).
