Documentation/Tasks and Journal/The Journal

The Journal

The Journal contains a page for each day. Perfect as a scratchpad for quick entries, daily thoughts, future notes to self, and keeping track of what to do and when. When you work in a team, each member in your workspace has their own daily page, and you can leave notes on each other’s journal pages.

⌘JCtrl+J opens today. Use it for the day’s notes and to plan which tasks you will work on, today and this week.

A day in the Journal: the day’s tasks, with flags, and notes underneath.

Schedule a task

Drag any task onto a Journal day, or put the cursor on it and press ⌘⇧JCtrl+Shift+J for today. The task stays in its page and also shows on the Journal, and ticking it off in either place ticks it off everywhere.

A task can be on more than one person’s Journal. Mentioning someone says who is responsible; scheduling says when they plan to do it. Both are visible to the team.

Teammates’ Journals

Everyone’s Journal is in the workspace. ⌘JCtrl+J always goes to your own Journal for today first; press it again while you are there and it steps through your teammates’ Journals, if the workspace has any. Or click a person’s name anywhere and choose Go to Journal.

Upcoming

At the top of each Journal page, Upcoming lists the open tasks that need you that day. It looks at tasks that mention you or are on your Journal, and at unassigned tasks that are Important or Alert, or that have a due date and are on nobody’s Journal. It shows the ones due that day, the overdue ones, and Important or Alert tasks without a due date, leaving out tasks already on the page.

The query behind it is in the Journal’s Collection Settings… → Related, so you can change what counts. The Query language reference has the default query and the variables for writing your own.

Reviewing

Your Journal pages show your plan day by day, and the Tasks overview groups your tasks by date. In search, @scheduled=@me @todo lists every open task on your Journal, and @todo and not @scheduled what still needs a day. Unfinished tasks don’t move by themselves. At the end of a day, drag what’s left to tomorrow or let it go.

The Journal is part of the workspace, like every other page. For private notes, use a workspace of your own.

Add a Journal to another workspace

The Journal is a special collection added to the first workspace in an account by default. To add one to another workspace, create a collection, for example named Journal, and open Collection Settings… → Edit Code. On the Custom Code tab, replace the code with:

class Plugin extends JournalCorePlugin {}

Save, and the collection works as a Journal: a page per day for every member, with Upcoming at the top. A workspace can have only one Journal.
