Export and backups

Workspace admins open Settings → Export. There are three ways to get a copy.

Option What you get Use it for
Markdown Export A ZIP with every page as Markdown, plus attachments Reading elsewhere, moving to another tool, a snapshot
Full Data Export An encrypted ZIP of the workspace in Thymer’s own JSON format, including version history A complete backup
Markdown Mirror A folder on your disk that stays current A live file-based copy, working in files, builds, agents

For one page or a few lines, copying is quicker: select them, press ⌘⇧CCtrl+Shift+C and choose Copy Markdown. See Writing and formatting.

Markdown Export

Choose Markdown Export and Download ZIP. The ZIP is built on your device from the data it has, so it works offline; sync first for a complete copy. Include metadata adds the line ids and type hints that agents and the CLI use for exact round trips; turn it off for cleaner files to read. Attachments are in a files/ folder with relative links from the pages.

Full Data Export

The server packs the whole workspace, history included, into an encrypted ZIP. It needs a connection. Keep the export password somewhere safe; without it the archive can’t be opened. thymercli export decrypt turns it into plain JSON files; see The CLI. Importing a full export into a new workspace is coming soon.

Keep a backup

A live mirror follows the workspace, deletions included, so it is not a backup by itself. Copy the mirror folder or a Markdown Export somewhere else now and then, dated. Treat the plaintext copies like the workspace itself.

For a page that was trashed, text that was changed, or a file edit that collided, you don’t need a backup: see Version history and Trash.

Self-hosting

A self-hosted Thymer server is coming soon, for companies and individuals that want to run it on their own hardware and switch between our cloud and their own at will. That move is what the Full Data Export is for: it holds the whole workspace, history included, to take to your own server. See Ejectable apps for the idea behind it. Until then, use the exports above to keep your own copy of your data.

Leaving

Export every workspace you want to keep, each as an admin, and check a few pages and attachments in the result. Then Delete/Leave in the workspace settings, and Close Account in the account settings.
